Pre-Thanksgiving Fun!

We finished our unit on "Community Helpers" in Social Studies and started a new unit called, " America our Great Country". To begin the unit we learned about Christopher Columbus and how he discovered America by sailing right to it! 

We made boats out of gourds and decided they did not sail as good as the Nina, the Pinta, or the Santa Maria!
  

The globe was helpful in showing how far Christopher sailed.        

Next we learned about Pilgrims and how brave they were!


In Phonics we talked about alphabetical order and the kids arranged themselves from A-G.


We had a great time at recess on Tuesday and enjoyed the leaves and the sunshine!




Lastly, this week we had a great discussion about the things we are thankful for and made turkey place-mats to remind us of them all!




I even had lots of helpers to laminate the place-mats!

Fall is in the air!

This year is flying by! We have been taking advantage of the sunshine and trying to enjoy outside recess while we still can. Although I have found that playing "Freeze Tag" really warms you up;)

This week I've added a couple of different literacy stations to our Reading time. We have a....

Mitten match station, where the students match words from the same word families. (Rhyming words)

There is also a station where the kids stamp the words into playdough as they sound them out.

In Math we are learning about different forms of measurement. We talked about how long an inch is and the kids had fun using rulers to measure things around our classroom.
                           
                       

During our Learning Centers we have been practicing spelling and writing our last names....

Our final project of the week was to collect fall leaves from outside and use them to create a work of art! Our class is full of creative children! (Look for our work to be displayed in the hall.)
                                    

Spirit Week!

We've had a lot of excitement this week in class! It has been fun seeing how all of our friends dress up for spirit week!

We have managed to learn a few things, even with all the excitement....

We played "Musical Word" with our sight words.

In Social Studies we learned about Doctors and Veterinarians.

 

In our learning centers we worked with geo-shapes to create different animals.

Susan came to visit again!

 One of the best parts of our week was making our project for the auction on Saturday. We made a string art sign to hang on a wall. The kids worked hard and it turned out great!!!

Pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins!

You can tell fall is here when everywhere you look you see pumpkins! (My personal favorite is the Pumpkin Latte;) This week we have spent a lot of time learning about pumpkins, reading about pumpkins, and even visiting a pumpkin farm. So, once again, pardon my picture obsession.....

          

They listened to a lesson about how pumpkins grow and were able to hold baby chicks!

They also got to feed the goats and a donkey some corn and played a few bean bag toss games!

In Science we carved a pumpkin and talked about being like the pumpkin and letting our lights shine for Jesus!

Unrelated to pumpkins but also a part of our week....

We missed Mrs. Tonner for music class, but filled in the time by singing around the piano and playing musical chairs...as a side note...IT'S A BOY! CONGRATS Mrs. Tonner and Clayton!

We had some special guests for show and tell...Shiloh's kittens!

Lastly, the entire school was invited down to the cafeteria to watch the Middle School Science Fair!

They did a great job and I think the Kindergartners really enjoyed watching!
